The King’s House, Viscri

Viscri

The King’s House in Viscri is open for visitors every year, from April to October. The traditional Saxon property in the Unesco World Heritage village Viscri hosts, in the reconverted barn, the permanent exhibition of botanical art and book The Transylvania Florilegium, as well as a series of temporary exhibitions.

”As tourists visiting Viscri have always been very eager to learn as much as possible about the connection that His Majesty, King Charles III has with the village, The King’s Foundation decided in 2021 to transform the house in Viscri into an open house that speaks about the king’s passion for traditional architecture, sustainable agriculture, the protection of biodiversity and our valuable cultural heritage - in other words, about His Majesty’s love for Romania.” – Mihai Grigore, administrator The King’s House, Viscri.

The paintings of the florilegium were created by some of the finest contemporary botanical artists in the world, studying the flora at His Majesty’s properties at Viscri and Zalanpatak for over five years. In the florilegium, scientific information about each plant accompanies each of the 124 botanical illustrations. The two volumes of the Transylvania Florilegium will raise awareness of the diversity and beauty of the Transylvanian flora and inspire people to assist in its preservation.
In addition, visiting The King’s House in Viscri, tourists can learn about the "Ambulance for Monuments" project, launched in 2016 to save hundreds of heritage buildings in Romania through a network of active patrimony organizations. Emergency interventions are carried out by experts, students and trained craftsmen on a voluntary basis with the support of communities and local authorities. At the heart of the project in each region is an intervention kit – a van equipped with tools, equipment and construction materials. Since its beginning, the project has been supported by The Prince's Foundation (now The King’s Foundation), an organization chaired by His Majesty King Charles III. The Ambulance of Monuments won the Public Choice Award at the 2020 European Heritage Awards/Europa Nostra Awards. More than 38,000 Romanian and foreign tourists crossed the threshold of the king's house in 2023. Visiting the house in Viscri, reopened this season under the name "The King's House", tourists will discover a simple, traditional Saxon household. The gift shop features a selection of products from local artists and artisans. Most of the profits generated are directed to projects that benenefit the local community.
