State Philharmonic Esplanade in Sibiu

Strada Cetății 3-5, Sibiu

The Philharmonic Esplanade of the has established itself as a meeting point for friends of music over the past five years, being dedicated to concerts and recitals through which the State Philharmonic in Sibiu addresses a diverse, predominantly young audience, “democratising” access to culture. At the initiative of manager Cristian Lupeș, the first musical events organised on the esplanade in Cetății Street took place during the pandemic, in order to comply with health safety measures, when artists had to leave the concert hall to be in front of those who wanted to keep in touch with the miracle of the fourth form of art. This daring endeavour was a form of therapy for musicians and spectators alike and later became one of the institution's constant ways of engaging with the community.
During the summer season, the “Sibiu Music Stops” and “Take an Opera Break” flashmobs, jazz concerts, ballet and other dance paradigms, as well as the European Music Summit and even large-scale events, such as in 2024, when several instrumental ensembles prepared a programme dedicated to the Italian National Day, which was enthusiastically received by the people of Sibiu and tourists who came to admire the most beautiful street in Sibiu. The refurbishment of the esplanade, which included the realisation of a modern architectural lighting system, enhances all the more this unique space in Sibiu and in Romania, whose existence proves time and again that music has the power to bring us together in harmony.
