Fuga Lolelor Cincu. Museum in Progress
Cincu, Brașov County
The village association Fuga Lolelor Cincu/Großschenker Urzellauf together with the SOXEN Association have set up in Cincu, in Brașov County, a “Museum in the making”, dedicated to the ancient custom of chasing away winter and evil spirits, Fuga Lolelor. The museum, which documents topics of local culture and history contextualised by contemporary works of art, is located in the first town hall of Cincu until 1714 (Class A heritage monument) and is housed within the fortified walls of the Evangelical Church CA of Cincu.
Fugalor Lolelor Cincu/Großschenker Urzellauf is a medieval custom closely linked to the workings of the Transylvanian craft guilds. Every year, when the chest containing the money and guild secrets was transferred to the new Guild Master, the Lole, masked characters in grotesque costumes, who made a great noise with their whips and specially made bells, were called to protect this procession as a symbol of prosperity, fertility and the banishment of all that could be harmful, seen or unseen.
The exhibition that will be on display at the time of the SoNoRo Musikland concert (31 July 2024) is called “It takes a whole village” (15.06-15.10.2024) and contains both documentary photographs of the Cincu custom from the 1960s-1990s, but also after its revival from 2017 to the present days. Also, in partnership with the Evangelical Parish of Cincu, rare artefacts belonging to the Saxon community will be on display, the oldest being dated 1681. Last but not least, the experience is complemented by contemporary artworks, realised especially for this exhibition, by artists such as Sillyconductor (sound artist, RO), Sorina Vazelina (illustrator, RO), Magdalena Menzinger (photographer, DE), Pascual+Vincent (photographers, ES) and others.
The SoNoRo Musikland concert will take place in the garden within the walls of the Fortified Church of Cincu, which will be open to the public for the first time on this occasion.
The Association Fuga Lolelor Cincu//Großschenker Urzellauf is founded in 2024 in a community effort to preserve the culture and customs of Cincu.
SOXEN Association was established in 2013 and contributes to the preservation of cultural heritage, especially intangible, being known, through the KraftMade programme, as a research and experimentation laboratory in craft excellence, conducting courses, exhibitions and events dedicated to popularising and cross-fertilising crafts with other arts.
